ABOUT PIMA

Pima Elementary School has served the Scottsdale Community for  48 years! Serving 630 students in grades K-6, Pima is a comprehensive elementary school, providing a balanced curriculum which includes basic skills as well as extended learning opportunities. Our learning environments include skills group instruction in reading and math, and a balance of direct instruction and cooperative learning. Fifth and sixth graders follow the middle school concept of working with a team of teachers who provide instruction in the core subjects.

Specialists in the areas of vocal music, band, orchestra, art, and physical education add to the basic instruction provided by the regular classroom teachers. Students with special needs are served by our gifted education teachers, special education teachers, and language acquisition specialists. ESL certified teachers are assigned to each grade level to meet the needs of our second language learners. A Title I resource teacher provides remediation and basic skills instruction to students.  All of our kindergartners participate in a full day of instruction at no cost to the parents.

Since 2004, Pima has housed the district's Comprehensive Gifted Program, self-contained classes for the district's most academically talented 4th-6th graders. A comprehensive media center and two computer labs are also among the resources available to students.

While Pima Elementary School has been the center of its south Scottsdale neighborhood since 1959, it has recently been remodeled and upgraded. There have had major renovations to the school's music classrooms, cafeteria and kitchen, student restrooms, and administration and student service building. In addition, upgrades to the school's heating and air conditioning and plumbing systems have been made. Lighting and fire alarms have been upgraded, security fencing has been installed, and many site upgrades including new roofs, painting and landscaping have taken place.  Our PTO has recently purchased new playground equipment and shade structures.

The past four years, Pima has been named as an "Excelling" School, the highest academic designation given to schools in Arizona. Pima has been one of the very few Title I, Excelling Schools in the state.  The Renaissance Learning Institute has also named Pima a Master School for the past three years for the success that students have demonstrated in the area of reading.
